1. Self-Employed Registration Overview
Being a freelancer in the Netherlands means you run your own business. You must register officially and get a tax number.
Needed Documents
- Valid personal ID (paspoort or identiteitskaart)
- Proof of address (e.g., woonplaatsbewijs or utility bill)
Register with the Kamer van Koophandel. Go to kvk.nl, fill the online form, choose your activity code (NACE), and submit.
You will receive a KvK‑nummer. Keep this number for tax registration.
Get a Tax ID
After getting the KvK number, register with the Belastingdienst. Use the Mijn Belastingdienst portal or visit a tax office. Provide your personal details and KvK‑nummer.
The Belastingdienst will give you a Belastingnummer. This is your tax identification for the next five years.
Important Tips
Register within three months of starting work. Keep invoices and records. If you employ staff, register for payroll tax as well.
